BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) — The small grocery-store chain Haggen on Tuesday sued Albertsons for more than $1 billion in damages, alleging the supermarket giant engaged in systematic efforts to eliminate it as a viable competitor in five states. Earlier this year, Haggen bought 146 Albertsons and Safeway stores, expanding from 18 stores in Oregon and Washington into new markets in California, Nevada and Arizona, The Seattle Times reported (http://is.gd/553N06). Albertsons and Safeway were forced to jettison those stores to win approval by the Federal Trade Commission for their merger.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Famed attorney Alan Dershowitz was recruited by Sands China Ltd. on Tuesday to argue that Nevada's Supreme Court should dismiss a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by the company's former CEO five years ago. Dershowitz offered a hypothetical: What if a Sands China waiter spilled soup on a Macau customer in Macau? Could the customer sue in Las Vegas? No, it couldn't, he said.

Mexican president sends state-of-the-nation report to Congress as country beset by doubts

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto sent his written state-of-the-nation report to Congress on Tuesday in an atmosphere of rising violence, a falling currency and a slowing economy. At the time, Pena Nieto was delivering on his main pledge, which was to reduce Mexico's drug-war-era violence. But progress there seems to have stalled. Homicides in the first seven months of 2015 were running about 3 percent above figures for the same period last year.

Judge grants class-action status to case in California against Uber over payment of drivers

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A federal judge granted class-action status Tuesday to a lawsuit in California against Uber over the payment of its drivers, upping the stakes for the ride-hailing company in the case. "Today's ruling sets the stage for a trial and a legal battle that will have dramatic implications for Uber's business model as well as more generally how independent contractors are viewed under California law," said Lonnie Giamela, a labor lawyer in Los Angeles who has been following the case.
