Justice Dept. announces nearly $17 billion mortgage settlement with Bank of America

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bank of America's record $16.65 billion settlement for its role in selling shoddy mortgage bonds — $7 billion of it geared for consumer relief — offers a glint of hope for desperate homeowners. But consumer advocates say relatively few people will be helped relative to the devastation triggered by the mortgage bonds, which fueled the worst financial crisis since the 1930s and threw millions of homes into foreclosure.

Venezuelan government proposes grocery fingerprint system to combat shortages of basic goods

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuelans could soon have to scan their fingerprints to buy bread. In announcing the plan late Wednesday, Maduro did not say when the system would take effect, but other administration officials suggested it could be in place by December or January. The move was met with skepticism. Critics said the new system is tantamount to rationing and constitutes a breach of privacy. Others simply wondered if anything short of a systemic overhaul of the economy could help the socialist South American country's chronically bare shelves.

US Census study finds that rich got richer, poor poorer between 2000 and 2011

NEW YORK (AP) — A report from the Census Bureau is the latest evidence that the rich are getting richer while the poor get poorer. But because wealth dropped for the majority of Americans, the median household net worth for the country overall declined about 7 percent to $68,828. The report was compiled using surveys done by the Census. It includes stocks, money in the bank, home values, retirement accounts and other assets in its measurement of net worth.

US institute says upgrade of North Korean rocket launch pad should be ready by the fall

WASHINGTON (AP) — Construction to upgrade North Korea's main rocket launch pad should be complete by this fall, allowing Pyongyang to conduct a launch by year's end if it decides to do so, a U.S. research institute said Thursday. The institute says construction is nearing completion at the launch pad to handle larger rockets than the Unha-3 that was blasted into space from Sohae in December 2012.
