Wal-Mart cuts hundreds of HQ jobs ... McMillon, "Retail is changing and we must change"

NEW YORK (AP) — Wal-Mart laid off 450 workers at its headquarters Friday as the world's largest retailer attempts to become more nimble so that it can better compete with the likes of Amazon.com. The layoffs follow months of rumors about them and they arrived less than two months after Wal-Mart trimmed its annual earnings outlook as profits fell. That is partly because of hefty investments Wal-Mart has made in e-commerce as well as higher wages for hourly workers.

Amid rebuilding, Maine's scallop fishery to see cuts as some fishermen cheer conservation

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A plan to place new restrictions on Maine's scalloping industry is the right way to ensure that the fishery keeps rebuilding, some fishermen say. The fishery is also on the mend, as fishermen caught nearly 4.9 million pounds of the scallops last year, up from less than 700,000 pounds five years earlier. Catches sometimes topped 10 million pounds in the 1990s.
