DETROIT (AP) — A year after filing for bankruptcy, Detroit is building momentum to get out, especially after workers and retirees voted in favor of major pension changes just a few weeks before a judge holds a crucial trial that could end the largest public filing in U.S. history. "I want to thank city retirees and active employees who voted for casting aside the rhetoric and making an informed, positive decision about their future and the future of the city," said Kevyn Orr, the state-appointed emergency manager who has been handling Detroit's finances since March 2013.

California's Wawona Packing issues voluntary nationwide fruit recall over listeria concerns

(AP) — A Central California company has issued a voluntary nationwide recall of specific lots of its fresh peaches, plums, nectarines and pluots over concerns of possible listeria contamination. The company said the recalled fruit was packed and shipped to retailers from June 1 through July 12.

McDonald's profit slips as US sales continue to suffer

OAK BROOK, Ill. (AP) — McDonald's Corp. said its profit slipped in the second quarter as sales in the U.S. continued to flag. In the U.S., sales at established locations fell 1.4 percent for the period fewer customers came into its restaurants. The company, based in Oak Brook, Illinois, hasn't managed to raise the figure since October.

Travelers 2Q profit drops 26 percent, misses forecast

NEW YORK (AP) — The Travelers Cos. (TRV) on Tuesday reported net income that decreased by 26 percent in its second quarter, and missed analysts' expectations. Earnings, adjusted for non-recurring gains, came to $1.93 per share. The average estimate of analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.06 per share.
