Former sweetener company CEO pleads guilty to theft, fraud charges over failed Missouri plant

ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) — A man who persuaded a rural Missouri town and the state to invest millions in bonds and incentives for an artificial sweetener plant that never materialized pleaded guilty Tuesday to three felony charges. Cole, 67, was the chief executive officer of Mamtek U.S. Inc., a company Cole formed to produce artificial sweetener. He convinced the city of Moberly in 2010 to issue $39 million in bonds for a sweetener plant that Cole said would employ 600. The state authorized up to $17 million in incentives.

The production rules are being revised because Colorado once limited pot-growers to the number of medical marijuana patients they served.

Home Depot may be latest retailer to be hacked; investigates suspicious credit card activity

NEW YORK (AP) — Home Depot may be the latest retailer to suffer a credit card data breach. The Atlanta-based home improvement retailer told The Associated Press Tuesday that it is looking into "unusual activity" and that working with both banks and law enforcement. "Protecting our customers' information is something we take extremely seriously, and we are aggressively gathering facts at this point while working to protect customers," said Paula Drake, a spokeswoman at Home Depot, declining to elaborate. She said the retailer would notify customers immediately if it confirms a breach.
