New York Senate leader says he is innocent in corruption case that resulted in son's arrest

NEW YORK (AP) — The leader of the New York Senate was arrested Monday on charges including extortion and soliciting bribes after investigators looking into the awarding of a $12 million contract to a company that hired his son said they captured him on wiretaps boasting of his power. After a brief appearance before a magistrate judge, they were ordered to turn over their passports and were released.

Study: Tax breaks for Camden could cost New Jersey if businesses don't stay for decades

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — The tax credits the state is using to attract businesses to Camden could end up costing more than they bring in even if the companies fulfill their minimum obligations, an advocacy group warned. The study, to be published Tuesday and made available beforehand to The Associated Press, relies on data provided by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and looks at how much economic benefit the businesses could generate if they all left Camden after 15 years, the earliest they could leave without having to pay back portions of the tax credits.

Obama cites powerlessness in minority communities, helps launch foundation to help young men

NEW YORK (AP) — In a deeply personal response to outbreaks of racially motivated protests, President Barack Obama on Monday blamed a lack of opportunity in minority communities and harsher treatment of black and Hispanic men by police for fueling a sense of "unfairness and powerlessness." Helping launch a foundation to assist young minorities, Obama said the catalysts of protests in Ferguson, Missouri, and in Baltimore were the deaths of young black men and "a feeling that law is not always applied evenly in this country."
