OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — When the call came from an officer who needed help facing an armed robber at a fast-food restaurant, two members of a reality television show riding along with Omaha police hustled to record the confrontation. Bryce Dion, 38, of Boston, the audio supervisor for "Cops," is the first crew member of the long-running TV show to be killed while filming police in action, executives with the show's production company said. Police identified the robbery suspect as 32-year-old Cortez Washington, who was on parole from Missouri for a robbery conviction.

Release of hostage means CBS can use material from interview it held back

NEW YORK (AP) — The release of U.S. journalist Peter Theo Curtis by Syrian captors has prompted "60 Minutes" to issue portions of an interview with a fellow ex-hostage that the show had edited last year to remove references to Curtis. Curtis' family, however, asked CBS not to identify him for fear that it could jeopardize his chances for release, said CBS News spokesman Kevin Tedesco. The detail about how Curtis helped Schrier climb to safety, in particular, was seen as something that could anger his captors.

NEW DELHI (AP) — India's state-owned banks are conducting a massive campaign to open millions of accounts for poor Indians who are off the financial grid and vulnerable to black market money lenders. Modi urged banks in a recent letter to "try your best to ensure that no one is left without a bank account." The goal is to sign up 150 million people by 2018. About half of India's 1.2 billion people lack bank accounts.

Hitting back at businesses opposing Scottish independence, others declare their support

LONDON (AP) — Some 200 business leaders have offered support for the idea of Scottish independence from Britain, hitting back after a similar letter from other companies argued there are too many uncertainties surrounding the Sept. 18 vote. The letter Thursday comes the day after other leaders wrote that the case for independence had not been made, saying vital issues such as what currency the country would use remain unresolved.
