LIMA, Peru (AP) — International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde said Wednesday that failure to take urgent action on global warming will condemn humanity to the same fate as the Peruvian poultry that so many delegates to the group's annual meeting are enjoying this week in a country famed for its cuisine.

China stocks jump after long holiday, other Asian indexes hesitant ahead of Fed minutes

HONG KONG (AP) — Pent-up investor demand fueled a jump in Chinese stocks after markets reopened Thursday following an extended holiday but other Asian bourses were lackluster ahead of the release of minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting. MARKET TALK: China's "rally is partly driven by the positive economic data released over the holiday break, such as a slightly better than expected official manufacturing" index, said Gerry Alfonso, trading director at Shenwan Hongyuan Securities in Beijing. "There are also some technical reasons for the rebound as investors are likely to start rebuilding portfolios after reducing positions before the holidays," he said. "Investors seem to be hunting for bargains in these initial trading moments."

Senate Democrats announcing legislative push to curb guns, with little chance of success

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats are preparing a legislative push to curb guns, a week after a mass shooting at an Oregon community college refocused attention on the nation's toll of firearms deaths. Democrats plan to eventually demand votes on their proposals and use procedural delays to thwart legislation if Republicans refuse to do so, a Democratic aide said Wednesday. The aide wasn't authorized to discuss the plans publicly and requested anonymity.
