Austria checking trucks for migrants, creates huge traffic jam on main Budapest-Vienna highway

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Austria's decision to start inspecting trucks at its border with Hungary after 71 migrants died in a food truck has created a huge, 25-kilometer (15 1/2-mile) traffic jam on the main Budapest-Vienna highway. Both countries are part of the European Union's Schengen zone of passport-free travel. Under normal circumstances, vehicles are rarely inspected at the border anymore.

Japan bids farewell to modernist design icon as Hotel Okura begins pre-Olympic renovation

TOKYO (AP) — The Hotel Okura, a favored Tokyo lodging for U.S. presidents, movie stars and other celebrities, is closing the doors of its landmark half-century-old main building on Monday to make way for a pair of glass towers ahead of the 2020 Olympics. Andrew Lindsay, a Deutsche Bank executive who took part in a "Save the Okura" Facebook campaign, spent hours exploring the hotel during his first visit to Tokyo in the 1990s. During his last visit, he sat in the lobby, with its round, red lacquer tables and chairs arrayed like plum blossoms, soaking it all in one last time.

French minister backs strong eurozone economic government, financial transfers

BERLIN (AP) — France's economy minister is calling for a strong eurozone "economic government" with its own budget, and is arguing that preserving Europe's shared currency will require financial transfers from its strongest countries. Germany, Europe's biggest economy, is deeply averse to creating a "transfer union." But Macron said if eurozone members continue to object to "any form of financial transfer in the currency union, we can forget the euro and the eurozone."
