Tax institute says Oklahoma sales tax holiday on clothing and shoes offers minimal tax relief

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma's annual sales tax holiday on back-to-school clothing and shoes is expected to boost business for retailers beginning on Friday as thousands of students prepare to return to the classroom. Shoes and clothing costing less than $100 are exempt from state, city, county and local sales taxes during the period that begins shortly after midnight Thursday and ends at midnight Sunday, just days before students in Oklahoma's 517 public school districts begin a new school year.

APNewsBreak: Colorado tightening edible pot rules to cut down on accidental overconsumption

DENVER (AP) — Alarmed by booming sales of highly potent edible marijuana products, Colorado regulators have drafted an emergency rule making it easier for new users to tell how much pot they're eating. The result? Weaker pot brownies and cookies on store shelves, and new packaging requirements. A draft of the emergency rules, obtained Thursday by The Associated Press before their public release, requires Colorado's makers of edible pot to physically demark their products so that consumers can "intuitively determine" how much constitutes a dose of marijuana's intoxicating ingredient, THC.

Illinois man accused of inserting needles into store's packaged meat 'just for the hell of it'

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — A 68-year-old Illinois man was jailed without bond Thursday after being accused by federal prosecutors of inserting sewing needles into a packaged meat "just for the hell of it" at a grocery store in his hometown for more than a year. SuperValu Inc., the Minnesota-based corporate parent of the Shop 'n Save chain, stressed that none of the cases resulted in serious injury, and that the alleged tampering was isolated to only the meat section of one store.
