The 50th Super Bowl goes to San Francisco Bay Area

The 50th Super Bowl will be held in the San Francisco Bay Area and the NFL championship will go to Houston the following year. Team owners voted Tuesday for the 49ers' new stadium as host of the 2016 game. That facility in Santa Clara, Calif., is due to open for the 2014 season. San Francisco beat out South Florida, which was stymied in its bid to stage an 11th Super Bowl when the Florida Legislature did not support financing to renovate Sun Life Stadium.

ESPN cutting workforce, 'smartly managing costs'

ESPN is cutting its workforce, the latest Disney division to reduce staff. The company would not say how many jobs are being eliminated, but they include unfilled positions. ESPN has about 7,000 employees worldwide, with about 4,000 at its headquarters in Bristol, Conn. The vast majority work behind the scenes.

Connecticut officials laud tourism promo

Connecticut's "Still Revolutionary" tourism marketing campaign is succeeding and deserves continued funding, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said Tuesday. "We put $15 million aside for promotion of tourism," Malloy said. "It has a profound impact. It pays for itself." His comments came at a conference for the tourism industry at the Connecticut Convention Center where the "Still Revolutionary" campaign was celebrated. Malloy said he would defend the funds allocated for the marketing campaign and push to market the state in new venues.

Colo. governor signs school funding overhaul

Colorado educators looking for bold changes to how the state funds public education have part of the equation answered, with Gov. John Hickenlooper signing into law Tuesday a mammoth bill revising how state tax dollars should be used to fund public education. That question was left unanswered Tuesday when Hickenlooper joined fellow Democrats and education advocates to applaud the passage of a new school finance process for Colorado. The changes include statewide full-day kindergarten and more money for preschool and at-risk students. The new law also calls for money to implement school reforms such as a new teacher evaluation formula that takes effect next school year.
