Assembly to vote on Christie's tax credit increase to help low-income residents

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — New Jersey residents with low incomes could see higher tax rebates under a proposal from Gov. Chris Christie being considered by the Legislature. Democrats and Republicans exchanged sarcasm-laced barbs over the legislation, which arose from Christie's conditional veto of the Democrats' tax increase on income over $1 million.

Supreme Court rules against EPA limits on mercury emissions from power plants

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court ruled Monday against the Obama administration's attempt to limit power plant emissions of mercury and other hazardous air pollutants, but it may only be a temporary setback for regulators. The EPA did factor in costs at a later stage, when it wrote standards that are expected to reduce the toxic emissions by 90 percent. But the court said that was too late.

US railroad regulators ask digital map makers to add audio, visual alerts for track crossings

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The federal agency that oversees railroads has asked digital mapping companies to alert drivers as they approach track crossings in the hope that visual and audio cues will lead to greater awareness of potential dangers. The effort comes as deaths from train-on-vehicle collisions increased in 2014 from 2013, according to the agency. With approximately 270 deaths, 2014 was the first year-over-year increase this decade, the agency said. And this year began with major accidents at crossings near New York City, Los Angeles and in North Carolina.
