New York & Co. reports first-quarter loss of $4.7 million

NEW YORK (AP) _ New York & Co. (NWY) on Thursday reported a loss of $4.7 million in its fiscal first quarter. On a per-share basis, the New York-based company said it had a loss of 7 cents. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring costs and severance costs, came to 3 cents per share. The results fell short of Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was breakeven on a per-share basis.

HP sells stake in Chinese storage and server unit for $2.3B amid tech tensions

NEW YORK (AP) — Hewlett-Packard is selling a controlling stake in its China sever and storage unit, a move that comes as the Chinese government, apparently worried about U.S. cyberspying, has encouraged the use of local companies. HP said the move will accelerate growth in the country. "HP is making a bold move to win in today's China," said CEO Meg Whitman. "Partnering with Tsinghua, one of China's most respected institutions, the new H3C will be able to drive even greater innovation for China, in China."

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) _ Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ) on Thursday reported fiscal second-quarter earnings of $1.01 billion. The Palo Alto, California-based company said it had profit of 55 cents per share. Earnings, adjusted for one-time gains and costs, were 87 cents per share. The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of 13 analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of 86 cents per share.

FDA report shows inadequate cleaning, testing at Ohio ice cream plant where listeria found

WASHINGTON (AP) — A government investigation of Ohio-based Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams found inadequate testing and cleaning in its Columbus plant that had become contaminated with listeria. The Jeni's recall came as Texas-based Blue Bell Creameries also shut down and recalled all products after listeria in its products was linked to three deaths.
