SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Japan's stock benchmark surged 5 percent to the highest level since late 2007 and the yen slid against the dollar Friday after the Bank of Japan unexpectedly announced new stimulus to boost a flagging economy. Expectations Japan's $1.1 trillion public pension fund would boost its equity holdings gave a further boost to the market.

Slight rise in inflation little relief to European Central Bank as economy remains weak

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Inflation has crept higher in the 18 countries that use the euro but the rise to 0.4 percent in the year to October is unlikely to offer much relief to the European Central Bank as it tries to boost a weak economy. The European Central Bank is under pressure to give the eurozone another dose of stimulus measures in coming months because inflation is so low and growth so weak. There are fears the eurozone could even fall into outright deflation, a crippling downward price spiral.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) — A federal judge has ruled that investors who lost money in a fraud scheme will receive most of their money back. Russia says gas supplies to Ukraine will resume after Ukraine makes first payment next week

MOSCOW (AP) — Russia says gas supplies to Ukraine will resume after it pays off the first debt installment next week. The deal eased fears that Europe will end up shivering this winter as occurred during a 2008 gas dispute when Ukraine siphoned gas intended for Europe and Russia turned off the taps in response.
