MasterCard's $19M data breach settlement with Target dies after failing to get bank support

NEW YORK (AP) — A $19 million deal between Target and MasterCard to settle lawsuits stemming from the retailer's pre-Christmas 2013 data breach has been scrapped, because it didn't get enough support from banks and credit unions. Banks and credit unions would have been able to use the money to cover related operating costs and fraud-related losses. But the settlement needed 90 percent of the issuers to accept the offer in order for it to go into effect.

Clinton says GOP opposition to Export-Import bank threatens small-business jobs

HAMPTON, N.H. (AP) — Republicans in Congress and GOP presidential hopefuls are threatening tens of thousands of small business jobs by seeking to cut a little-known government agency that guarantees loans to help U.S. exporters, Hillary Rodham Clinton said Friday. The Democratic front-runner said Republicans in the 2016 presidential campaign would rather threaten those jobs rather than "stand up to the tea party and talk radio."

Q&A: What's driving Wal-Mart to ask suppliers to curb use of antibiotics

NEW YORK (AP) — Wal-Mart, the world's biggest retailer, is the latest company to ask its suppliers to curb the use of antibiotics in farm animals. Here's a rundown of what's driving the decision: Q: Why do farmers use antibiotics in raising animals in the first place? A: Farmers use antibiotics in animals for the same reason they're used in humans, to treat infections and other illnesses. But the drugs are also given to farm animals broadly in feed and water in order to fatten them up.

Coast Guard: Fire prompts evacuation of 28 workers, shutdown of platform off Louisiana coast

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A fire broke out Friday on an oil platform storing some 168,000 gallons of crude off Louisiana's coast, forcing the evacuation of 28 workers, the Coast Guard said. The blaze was reported near Breton Island, in state waters close to Louisiana's southeastern coast, and was still burning at mid-morning. Production on the platform was shut down, but the Coast Guard reported a light sheen of oil could be seen from the air along a more than one-mile stretch of water.
