NEW YORK (AP) — This year's PEN American Center gala was a defense of free expression, of Charlie Hebdo and of PEN itself. The mood was both celebratory and uneasy, as PEN at times recalled an attorney mounting its closing arguments. Michael Ondaatje, Francine Prose and four other writers scheduled to be table hosts had withdrawn because of objections to what they considered the satirical magazine's offensive cartoons of Muslims, with Gaiman and Alison Bechdel among those taking their place. 3 hours ago

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union unveiled Wednesday a long-term strategy to help its technology companies compete with U.S. giants like Google and Amazon by unifying the continent's digital sector and taking a hard line on abuses by dominant firms. The inquiry would look at the way that companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook or e-Bay handle online trade.

Daimler calls its self-driving big rig a 'short drive for man and a long haul for mankind'

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Its name is "Inspiration" and Daimler Trucks North America LLC says it's the first ever self-driving semi-truck licensed to drive on public roads — in this case Nevada's highways — for not only testing, but business too. The company's leaders said Tuesday night after the big rig made its debut atop Hoover Dam that the truck will be a showcase giving potential customers something to play with before Daimler eventually starts production.
