IMF urges Japan to take 'bold action' on reforms, huge public debt, or risk spooking markets

TOKYO (AP) — Japan needs "bold action" on revamping its economy and improving its precarious national finances, the International Monetary Fund says in its latest assessment of the world's third-largest economy. It said doubts about Japan's "long-term fiscal sustainability" — whether it can pay off its huge debt — could rise if investors lose confidence. Under such a scenario, now ultra-low interest rates on government bonds could shoot up, straining Japan's ability to support debt that is approaching 250 percent of its GDP, the highest level among industrialized countries.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas unemployment rate for April held steady at 4.2 percent, the Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday. Texas added an estimated 287,000 seasonally adjusted jobs over the past year, according to the commission. The leisure and hospitality industry led job gains in Texas, adding 6,900 positions. Other job gains happened in the information and trade, transportation and utilities sector, the agency reported.

Coast Guard: Fire prompts evacuation of 28 workers, shutdown of platform off Louisiana coast

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Fire on an oil platform off Louisiana's coast has forced the evacuation of 28 workers. The Coast Guard says the workers were evacuated by an offshore supply vessel that reported the fire at 2:50 a.m. Friday. No injuries were reported. Texas Petroleum Investment Company, the owner and operator of the platform, estimated no more than 120 barrels of crude oil — about 5,040 gallons — were stored on the platform. Coast Guard officials had earlier worried that storage tanks on the platform were filled to their capacity of 168,000 gallons.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — A federal appeals court has rejected a drug manufacturer's appeal and affirmed a judge's order that Actavis PLC keep distributing its widely used Alzheimer's medication until after its patent expires this summer. His office says the drug Namenda should remain on shelves 30 days after the patent expires July 11.
