Failing health, lack of investors force waterpark owner to descend tower after 17 days

CANDIA, N.H. (AP) — The owner of a New Hampshire waterpark who chained himself to a slide tower 17 days ago to try to prevent the park's auction has ended his quest because of failing health and the lack of a financial savior. "Dear friends and supporters, it is with profound sadness that I must tell you that my attempts to find a partner in time to save the waterpark from auction has failed," he wrote. "I had a number of interested parties but there just wasn't enough time to get the details worked out before the December 2nd auction. I tried my best to have the auction delayed but unfortunately I could not make it happen."

Judge hears arguments over gambling in New York attorney general's daily fantasy sports case

NEW YORK (AP) — A judge said Wednesday he would not take long to rule on a motion by New York's top law enforcement official to stop the country's two biggest daily fantasy sports companies from operating following two hours of arguments in a packed Manhattan courtroom. Earlier this month, Attorney General Eric Schneiderman sent both companies cease-and-desist letters after declaring their businesses illegal gambling operations that should be shut down. The companies have countered that their contests are skill-based, have been around for years and have attracted investments from media companies, sports teams and other others who have deemed them legal.

Occupancy rates at some Paris hotels down more than 30 percent following terror attacks

Occupancy rates at some Paris hotels have plunged by more than 30 percent in the days since the Nov. 13 terror attacks. The day after the attacks, there was a 14 percent drop from the same date a year earlier, followed by decreases in the 20 and 30 percent range Nov. 15 to 20. STR Global cautioned that the report only represents 37 percent of its monthly sample for Paris hotels, so the data is not definitive. But it does confirm anecdotal and other reports of a downturn in leisure travel to France.
