Sony PlayStation and Xbox networks still recovering from Christmas disruption

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Sony's PlayStation network remained offline Friday on the second day of an outage that began roiling the online world just as eager video game players were unwrapping new consoles on Christmas morning. Credit for the disruptions was claimed on Twitter by a group of self-proclaimed hackers called Lizard Squad — or someone purporting to speak for it. But many video game enthusiasts and some other hacker groups quickly condemned their actions. Even the notorious Kim Dotcom, a New Zealand-based online entrepreneur who's been accused of abetting Internet piracy, got into the act by offering free vouchers for his online privacy service if the Lizard Squad would agree to restore the Xbox network.

Venezuela foreign minister Ramirez named new UN envoy; Ramirez had been OPEC representative

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) — Venezuela's former oil czar, Rafael Ramirez, has been named the nation's envoy to the United Nations. President Nicolas Maduro made the announcement Friday, saying Ramirez would help Venezuela make best use of its two-year position on the U.N. Security Council. Ramirez was Venezuela's powerful oil czar until this fall, when he was reassigned to be foreign minister. Since then, he has represented the South American country before OPEC, unsuccessfully urging the organization to lower production in the face of plunging oil prices.
