NEW YORK (AP) — Mylan NV's shareholders approved the company's hostile pursuit of Perrigo Co. and the generic drugmaker hopes to push ahead with a formal offer soon. A combination of the two companies would create one of the world's largest makers of generic and over-the-counter medications. In April, Mylan raised its offer for Perrigo to $232.23, or about $34.1 billion, in cash and stock. But Dublin-based Perrigo once again rejected the takeover offer. Following Friday's shareholder approval, Mylan said it plans on launching a formal offer for Perrigo in the coming weeks.

US consumer spending up moderate 0.3 percent in July, while incomes rise 0.4 percent

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. consumers increased their spending by a moderate amount in July, while income growth was propelled by the largest jump in wages and salaries in eight months. Incomes increased 0.4 percent. The key category of wages and salaries rose 0.5 percent, the biggest advance since last November.

The decision coincided with an international conference showcasing Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's commitment to increasing the share of women in leadership positions to 30 percent.

Bank of Nova Scotia posts 3Q profit, results beat Street expectations

TORONTO (AP) _ Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) on Friday reported fiscal third-quarter net income of $1.44 billion. The bank, based in Toronto, said it had earnings of $1.16 per share. Earnings, adjusted for amortization costs, were $1.18 per share. The results topped Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $1.15 per share.
