CONTAMINATION INVESTIGATION: Authorities are investigating rice mills in southern China following tests that found almost half of the staple grain in one of the country's largest cities was contaminated with a toxic metal. THE BACKGROUND: The announcement followed reports over the weekend that government inspectors discovered that 44.4 percent of rice and rice products tested this year in the southern city of Guangzhou in Guangdong province showed high levels of cadmium.

Protesters rally at FirstEnergy meeting in W.Va.

At least 200 union workers picketed FirstEnergy Corp.'s annual shareholder meeting in West Virginia on Tuesday, demanding the Ohio-based utility hire enough people to keep the power on without forcing an ever-shrinking labor force to work as many as 1,800 hours of overtime a year. "We provide electric service 24 hours a day, seven days a week," he said, "and we need and require an appropriate response from our employees when we need them."

Remington plans $32 million expansion in Ark.

Remington Arms Company LLC says it will spend $32 million to expand the company's ammunition plant in Lonoke, Ark. Remington says the expansion will include the construction of a new building. Work is expected to begin later this year and finish up by next spring. Remington's Lonoke plant manager Jim Grahlmann says the expansion will help Remington meet a growing global demand for ammunition.
