Philippines suspends oil, gas exploration in disputed South China Sea region

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — A Filipino-British company says the Philippine government has ordered the suspension of all exploration at an offshore oil and gas field because of an ongoing territorial dispute with China. It said in a statement Monday that the area is subject to a U.N. arbitration case filed by the Philippines over China's rival claim to the territory.

EU report says more needs to be done to meet environmental goals like emission cuts

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union's environment body says the 28 member states need to do more to meet long-term environmental goals, including targets for greenhouse gas emissions. It said that the health impact of climate change on the EU's 500 million citizens is "expected to worsen." On the positive side, the report acknowledged that EU policies already have left many of parts of Europe "in as good a state today as it has been since the start of industrialization."

Swiss economy posts better-than-expected growth for 4th quarter, last before euro peg dropped

BERLIN (AP) — Official data show that Switzerland's economy expanded by a stronger-than-expected 0.6 percent in the fourth quarter, the last before the country's central bank abandoned its effort to cap the Swiss franc's value against the euro. Switzerland's economy grew 2 percent in 2014 as a whole.

In shifting North Korean economy, state-run chain stores try giving customers what they want

PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) — Workers in sharp new uniforms open the doors and turn on the lights about an hour before sunrise at their chain store on the corner of one of Pyongyang's main streets, right smack in the middle of a showpiece area of the capital. Business with a hint of capitalism isn't new in North Korea — it's how the common people have survived amid the breakdown in the government's ability to provide for them following the devastating famine and economic collapse of the 1990s. What's new is that, in a very real nod to the marketplace, this chain of state-owned stores is now fine-tuning their business strategy to actually give consumers what they need.
