Maine committee delays vote on LePage's pick for the Public Utilities Commission

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Democrats on a Maine legislative panel said Thursday they need more time before voting on Gov. Paul LePage's nominee to a board that regulates utilities in the state, drawing sharp criticism from Republicans who accused them of playing politics with the governor's pick. Democratic Rep. Mark Dion, committee chairman, said it's a significant appointment that should be considered carefully. Commissioners serve on the three-person panel for six years and play a large role in shaping energy policy in the state.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker says his state won't comply with Obama climate change plan

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, a Republican eyeing a presidential run in 2016, says President Barack Obama's plan to reduce pollution from coal-fired power plants is "unworkable." In a letter to Obama dated May 21, Walker complained that the proposed rule was "riddled with inaccuracies" and "questionable assumptions" that made it unworkable for his state. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the letter.

West Virginia will see huge drop in coal production over next 20 years, university report says

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia University researchers predict that state coal production will drop 39 percent compared with the industry's last high point in 2008 — less-than-encouraging news for more than 1,800 coal miners who learned last week they would likely lose their jobs. The report rattles off a combination of familiar economic, geological and regulatory challenges: weak export demand; less use of coal for electricity amid competition from natural gas; changes in emissions rules for power plants; and worsening geological conditions that make extracting southern West Virginia coal less productive.
