Samsung 3Q operating profit jumps on weak won, shares post biggest daily gain in over 6 years

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Samsung Electronics announced a forecast-beating profit for the third quarter Wednesday, sending its share price up nearly 9 percent, but analysts said strong component sales and favorable currency exchange rates masked persistent weakness in its smartphone business. Shares of Samsung Electronics closed up 8.7 percent, its biggest daily gain since January, 2009. Expectations that Samsung would dole out some of its cash to shareholders through a share buyback help fuel the rise.

Consumer Financial Protection Bureau moves to curb forced arbitration, a contentious practice

NEW YORK (AP) — The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau is considering rules that would severely curtail a contentious practice called forced arbitration, which consumer advocates have long argued does a disservice to people who have disputes with banks, credit card issuers and other financial service providers.

Concord gasholder, a reminder of America's industrial past, faces an uncertain future

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — A round, red-brick relic of this country's industrial transformation sits shakily at the southern entrance to New Hampshire's capital city, the cupola atop its conical, tree-damaged roof slumping northward. After the roof was damaged during a storm in 2013, the building was temporarily repaired and now historians and preservation experts worry that without permanent repairs — and soon — the building is doomed to the rubble pile.

Concord gasholder, a reminder of America's industrial past, faces an uncertain future

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The fate of a unique industrial building in New Hampshire could be decided soon. After the roof was damaged during a 2013 storm, the building was temporarily repaired. Historians and preservation experts worry that without permanent repairs soon, the building is doomed. Owner Liberty Utilities is weighing whether to repair, demolish or sell it. Demolition is three or four times cheaper than repair, but that doesn't include the cost of cleaning up contamination.
