Vermont single-payer advocates express anger at Shumlin for abandoning health plan

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) — Dozens of supporters of single-payer health care converged on the Statehouse Thursday to voice their anger at Gov. Peter Shumlin's announcement a day earlier that he was scrapping his push for such a program, while critics voiced dismay that the governor pushed the plan as far as he did.

Gov. Rick Snyder, legislative leaders strike road funds deal to put sales tax hike on ballot

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan voters would be asked to approve a sales tax increase as part of a $1.6 billion deal struck Thursday by Gov. Rick Snyder and legislative leaders, who settled on an all-or-nothing statewide vote to fix deteriorating roads. It would ask voters to raise the 6 percent state sales and use taxes to 7 percent, drop the sales tax on fuel and ensure that school aid fund revenue goes only to K-12 districts or community colleges — not universities. Transportation funding would rise by $1.3 billion a year, giving a big boost to the $2 billion now collected through fuel taxes and license plate fees. And $11.8 billion in annual school funding would jump by at least $300 million, the equivalent of $200 per student.

Hellman's maker Unilever drops lawsuit against maker of eggless spread 'Just Mayo'

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. (AP) — Hellman's mayonnaise maker Unilever says that it has withdrawn its lawsuit against the maker of "Just Mayo." Unilever had filed suit against Hampton Creek earlier this year claiming false advertising for Just Mayo, an eggless product. Unilever argued that "Just Mayo" has no eggs and therefore doesn't meet the definition of mayonnaise. Unilever had said that the word mayo implies that the product is mayonnaise, and that Just Mayo was stealing market share from Hellman's.

Correction: Alaska Pipeline story

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — In a story Dec. 17 about the office of the federal coordinator for Alaska gas pipeline projects, The Associated Press, relying on information from a spokesman for U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski reported erroneously on proposed funding for the project. Murkowski was prepared to support an amendment for funding but the bill never came up in committee.
