Conservationists, loggers in Oregon town team up on thinning forests to prevent big wildfires

JOHN DAY, Ore. (AP) — Logs are piled high in the yard of the Malheur Lumber Co. mill in this small town in northeastern Oregon, ready to be sawed into lumber. Steam pours out of the stacks. Trucks loaded with logs roll in. But the mill and the town's economy were rescued by a detente between the timber industry and environmentalists — foes since the battles over logging that erupted in the Pacific Northwest three decades ago. The sides uncovered a shared goal: thinning overgrown forests to prevent catastrophic wildfires.

Top business stories: A year of US economic might, hacker attacks, tumbling oil prices

NEW YORK (AP) — This year showed how sheltered the U.S. economy is from geopolitical and health crises around the world. The global economy sputtered, but the U.S. powered ahead. Employers are finally hiring enough to lower unemployment. A plunge in gas prices and a rising stock market has Americans feeling richer and spending a bit more.

Impoverished Cleveland suburb weighs bankruptcy as fiscal troubles, bills begin to add up

EAST CLEVELAND, Ohio (AP) — East Cleveland has long been one of the poorest cities in the state, a model for what urban decay looks like — streets filled with blighted and boarded-up homes and tired commercial districts. And it's beyond broke. The city government's cellphone provider recently cut off service for nonpayment. It is getting two new salt trucks purchased with federal money but won't be able to fill them because of what it owes Morton Salt Inc., one of the city's fiscal overseers said.
