China tells US that it opposes cyberattacks, but does not directly condemn Sony hackings

BEIJING (AP) — China told the U.S. that it is against cyberattacks and opposes any nation or individual launching such attacks from a third country, but did not directly condemn the Sony hackings that Washington has blamed on North Korea, China's foreign ministry said Monday. Sony Pictures canceled the release of the movie "The Interview," a comedy that revolves around the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, after receiving threats of terrorist attacks from hackers. U.S. federal investigators have connected the hackings to North Korea.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Global markets were mostly higher Monday after the Federal Reserve's pledge not to rush to raise interest rates prompted investors to add risky assets ahead of the year-end holiday. Belarus tries to cash in on its new role as bridge between Russia and West

MINSK, Belarus (AP) — As relations between Russia and the West have deteriorated, there's one country that's reaping rewards — Belarus, whose authoritarian leader was once dubbed "Europe's last dictator" by the United States and the European Union. Food exports to Russia have been a major hard currency-earner for cash-strapped Belarus, worth $5.7 billion in 2013. This year's figures aren't available yet, but a sharp rise in imports of food from Europe signaled that the country, which is sandwiched between Russia and EU members Poland and Lithuania, quickly took advantage of Moscow's ban.

Spain's Christmas lottery handing out $3B, spreading the payoff among many winners

MADRID (AP) — The drawing is underway in Spain for the world's biggest lottery payoff, a 2.5 billion-euro ($3 billion) pot of cash that will be divided among thousands of ticketholders. Unlike lotteries that offer one large jackpot, Spain's Christmas season lottery distributes winnings to thousands.
