Stocks plunge, wiping out July gains; Market logs first loss since January

2 hours, 43 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — For investors, there were few havens on Thursday. The stock market had its worst one-day drop since February, driven down by a confluence of worries, from weak company earnings to the looming end of stimulus from the Federal Reserve. But it wasn't just stocks that suffered; oil fell to its lowest level since March, gold dropped and even Treasury notes edged lower.

GOP candidate for California governor goes homeless to test Brown's economic comeback claim

2 hours, 43 minutes ago

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — The Republican candidate for California governor said Thursday he spent a week living as a homeless person in Fresno to highlight the disparity between the governor's claim that the state is making an economic comeback and the reality faced by the working poor in the nation's most populous state.

GE spinoff Synchrony Financial flat after initial public offering

2 hours, 47 minutes ago

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of Synchrony Financial barely moved Thursday in their debut on the New York Stock Exchange, but that's a better outcome than the broader markets which plunged. The credit card company raised $2.88 billion, selling 125 million shares at $23 each. That makes it the largest initial public offerings of the year so far, according to data provider Dealogic.

Companies handling troubled mortgages appear to skirt new US rules to prevent abuses

2 hours, 47 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Companies overseeing millions of mortgage loans appear to be skirting new federal regulations and legal settlements intended to stop them profiteering at the expense of troubled homeowners. The deals illustrate how regulators are still wrestling with messy banking practices more than six years after the housing market's collapse. They also mean that newly sold insurance agencies have an incentive to compel struggling homeowners to buy costly policies, to justify the high sales prices commanded when the insurance agencies were sold.
