NH auto dealers win protections from lawmakers

New Hampshire's auto dealers could be getting protections from lawmakers in their dealings with their manufacturers. The House voted 338-30 Wednesday to pass the Dealer Bill of Rights giving New Hampshire auto dealers greater leverage in agreements with manufacturers. The bill would limit mandatory facility upgrades to every 15 years. New Hampshire dealers had complained they currently have no leverage in agreements they sign with manufacturers. They said manufacturers can require them to pay for costly and unnecessary renovations.

American Eagle's 1Q profit tops expectations

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. reported a drop in its fiscal first-quarter profit because of falling sales and some special charges during the period, but the teen retailer's adjusted earnings beat market expectations. Shares rose in trading Wednesday on the news. The company earned $28 million, or 14 cents per share, for the quarter that ended May 4, down from $39.7 million, or 20 cents per share, in the same quarter last year. After adjusting for asset write-offs and other special items, it earned 18 cents per share, compared with 22 cents per share.

USDA approves 2 Iowa rural development projects

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is providing $1 million loans to two organizations in Iowa to support rural communities. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced recipients on Wednesday. Interstate 35 Telephone Co. which does business as Interstate Communications will get $1 million loan to build a telephone distribution facility. The company provides telephone and Internet service to several communities in southern Iowa.
