Micro Tech posts fiscal 3Q profit

Chipmaker Micron Technology Inc. on Wednesday reported a profit for its fiscal third quarter on improved pricing and revenue, beating analysts' estimates. Micron benefited from improved pricing in both of these markets due to more demand. The company reported after the market closed that it earned $43 million, or 4 cents per share, for the quarter that ended May 30. That compares with a loss of $286 million, or 28 cents per share, in the third quarter last year.
Mining company submits sampling plan to Wis. DNR

A company looking to dig a huge iron mine just south of Lake Superior has filed new papers with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources outlining a bulk sampling plan and notifying the agency it plans to seek a mining permit. The work is expected to begin in July and end by November 2014, according to the filings. The company would reseed the sites when the sampling is finished.
Leading 3-D printer firms to merge in $403M deal

Stratasys, a leading maker of 3-D printers, is buying another 3-D printer manufacturer, MakerBot, for $403 million in stock. Stratasys Ltd. says the acquisition will enable it to offer affordable desktop 3-D printers. MakerBot's owners will receive 4.76 million newly issued Stratasys shares and are eligible for another 2.38 million through the end of 2014 if certain performance targets are met. That could raise the purchase price by about $201 million based on Wednesday's stock price.
House votes to cut food stamps

The House has voted to cut food stamps by $2 billion a year. The Senate passed a farm bill last week that would make much smaller cuts to the food stamp program, which has doubled in cost since 2008. The House is debating 103 amendments to the five-year, half-trillion dollar bill as backers are trying to shore up votes for final passage. Democrats are opposing it because of the food stamp cuts, while some conservatives say the cuts aren't deep enough.
