Thailand cuts rice subsidy price after $4.4B loss

Thailand says it will pay farmers 20 percent less for rice to stem losses from a much-criticized subsidy program that dislodged the country from its spot as the world's No. 1 exporter of the grain. The government is also setting limits on the amount of rice the government will purchase to 500,000 tons per farmer.

World markets mostly down as investors eye Fed

Global stock markets were mostly lower Wednesday as investors waited for an update on the U.S. economy from the Federal Reserve. Stocks in Hong Kong, mainland China and Seoul went south. Hong Kong's Hang Seng index fell 1.1 percent to close at 20,986.89, while South Korea's KOSPI index shed 0.7 percent to 1,888.31. Shares also fell in New Zealand, Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia.
