The solar industry in Georgia is pushing a power monopoly to expand its use of solar energy as it plans to meet the state's electricity needs over the next two decades. "We think solar is the way to go," Debbie Dooley, a coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots, told the elected members of the Public Service Commission. "The sun is free, it's there. Understand Georgia Power is not being as aggressive on solar power and solar energy as they should be because they're trying to protect their monopoly."

Miami loses votes for 2 Super Bowl bids

The NFL conducted its own referendum on the Miami Dolphins stadium on Tuesday, shutting South Florida out when it handed out the 2016 and `17 Super Bowls. South Florida has hosted 10 Super Bowls _ the last in 2010 _ tied with New Orleans for the most. The area bid on both games being awarded on Tuesday, but the failure was expected since the Florida Legislature scuttled a plan that would help the Dolphins renovate Sun Life Stadium.

Death toll rises to 23 in China factory blast

The death toll from a massive blast at an explosives plant in eastern China has risen to 23 with 10 people still missing. The official Xinhua News Agency said Wednesday that 19 others were injured by the explosion, which ripped through the plant in Shandong province on Monday. The blast was so strong that 10 of those killed could only be identified by their DNA. Experts from the State Administration of Work Safety have been sent to the factory and are investigating the cause of the explosion.
