The Republican leaders of the House of Representatives are pledging to act to fix the nation's immigration system but making clear that they will not simply accept legislation passed by the Senate. The statement came two days after the Senate Judiciary Committee passed a comprehensive bill with a bipartisan vote to remake immigration laws and put the estimated 11 million people living here illegally on a path to citizenship.
Canada businessman's corruption trial on in Cuba

A Canadian businessman caught up in a corruption probe in Cuba apparently went on trial Thursday, nearly two years after he was detained and his import company, Tri-Star Caribbean, was shuttered. He did not speak to reporters, nor did Canadian Ambassador Matthew Levin, who also attended the proceedings. Foreign journalists were not allowed access to the court, and government officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Financial literacy program aimed at Neb. schools

A new program will offer an online education in financial literacy to Nebraska high school students and parents. The coursework addresses a range of financial topics, including credit cards, credit scores, insurance, mortgages, savings, student loans and taxes. Bonnie Sibert of the Nebraska Department of Education says the animated, interactive programs will add a new twist to existing financial literacy programs in schools.
Deputies arrest man they say posed as a Disney

Authorities say a man has been arrested after claiming to be a member of the Walt Disney family and giving away invalid Disneyland passes. The statement says he gave Disneyland passes to a woman for a raffle. When the winner took the passes to Disneyland, she learned they hadn't been activated. Deputies determined the man's name is 51-year-old Stephen David Urquidez and the passes were stolen from a store.
