Brown hounded for calling Manila 'gates of hell'

1 hour, 33 minutes ago

Dan Brown's description of Manila as "the gates of hell" in the American novelist's latest book has not gone down well with officials in the Philippine capital. The chairman of metropolitan Manila, Francis Tolentino, wrote an open letter to Brown on Thursday, saying that while "Inferno" is fiction, "we are greatly disappointed by your inaccurate portrayal of our beloved metropolis."

Horizon Organic eyeing snacks beyond dairy aisle

1 hour, 33 minutes ago

The maker of Horizon Organic milk is looking beyond the dairy aisle to introduce snacks such as cookies and crackers. In addition to milk, Horizon Organic also makes yogurt for kids, cheese sticks, butter, cottage cheese and cream cheese. Organic milk has been growing rapidly over the past decade but still only accounts for roughly 5 percent of the broader dairy market, Engles said. While traditional milk has been declining, he said organic milk is expected to grow at mid-single digits in coming years.

Emails show concern for Jackson deterioration

1 hour, 33 minutes ago

A stage manager working on Michael Jackson's ill-fated "This Is It" concert warned an AEG executive days before the star's death that he was in a physical and mental decline and needed help, according to an email shown to jurors Thursday in court. "My laymen's degree tells me he needs a shrink to get mentally prepared to get on stage," said Hougdahl, "and then a trainer to get him in physical shape."

Writer Chinua Achebe honored in Nigeria funeral

1 hour, 35 minutes ago

Writer Chinua Achebe shunned Nigeria's corrupt politicians and twice turned down national honors, never fearing to criticize those he felt ruined his country. On Thursday, however, the lawmakers and the country's elite came to praise him. It was a fitting tribute to the respect Achebe carried among the people here and for many others around the world who knew him through his books, which many say is the first African voice heard in modern literature.
