Woody Harrelson launches tree-friendly paper brand

Woody Harrelson is putting his paper where his passions are. The 51-year-old actor is the co-founder of Prairie Pulp & Paper Inc., which launched its brand of environmentally friendly paper Wednesday. The company spent 15 years researching and developing its Step Forward Paper. It's made of wheat-straw waste and wood fiber rather than virgin trees.

Gold and grain futures higher

Gold ended higher and grain contracts climbed in Wednesday trading. Benchmark crude finished 20 cents lower at $98.24 per barrel on the Nymex. Other energy contracts were higher. Gasoline rose 1.3 cents to $2.89 a gallon, heating oil added a penny at $2.97 a gallon and natural gas gained 5.8 cents to $3.96 per 1,000 cubic feet.

NuVasive rises as analyst looks to profit margins

NuVasive Inc. shares traded higher Wednesday after a Canaccord Genuity analyst raised his price target on the spinal device maker's stock, saying he expects NuVasive to report stronger profit margins starting in 2015. THE BIG PICTURE: NuVasive is based in San Diego and it makes devices used in minimally invasive spinal surgeries. It expects to report $655 million in revenue this year, up from $620.3 million in 2012. According to FactSet, analysts are forecasting $657.1 million in revenue on average.

Food stamp cuts key to farm bill's fate in House

House passage of a massive farm bill could turn on the level of food stamp cuts as key backers scrambled Wednesday to secure support for the five-year, half-trillion dollar measure. The bill would make it more difficult for some to qualify for food stamps while expanding some agriculture subsidies and setting policy for rural development programs.
