Best-selling author Vince Flynn dies at age 47

Best-selling author Vince Flynn, who wrote the Mitch Rapp counterterrorism thriller series and sold more than 15 million books in the U.S. alone, died Wednesday in Minnesota after a more than two-year battle with prostate cancer, according to friends and his publisher. He was 47. The St. Paul-based author also sold millions of books in the international market and averaged about a book a year, most of them focused on Rapp, a CIA counterterrorism operative. His 14th novel, "The Last Man," was published last year.
S&P upgrades Olin Corp.

Standard & Poor's Ratings Service on Wednesday raised its rating on Olin Corp., saying it expects the chlor-alkali and ammunition producer's operating performance and credit metrics to improve. The outlook is stable. S&P expects Olin's performance will continue to improve gradually, supported by strength in its Winchester ammunition business and the growth of its bleach and aqueous hydrochloric acid sales within the chlor-alkali business.
Grand Forks Herald publisher to retire next year

Mike Jacobs, publisher of the Grand Forks Herald who helped lead the newspaper to a Pulitzer Prize for its coverage of the historic 1997 Red River flood, plans to retire next year. The Herald was published at temporary sites for more than a year but never missed an edition. Papers were dropped by plane or trucked to towns where displaced residents were refugees.
Bipartisan proposal on student loans circulating

A bipartisan compromise on student loans started to take shape in the Senate on Wednesday, preserving fixed-rate loans for all students and linking interest rates with the financial markets. Students from more affluent families and graduate students could also see their interest rates decrease in the coming year under the preliminary outline.
