A look at how stimulus measure known as quantitative easing, or QE, works in practice

2 hours, 54 minutes ago

LONDON (AP) — It's the stimulus measure with the long, baffling name. Quantitative easing, or QE — the large-scale purchase by a central bank of government bonds and other securities — has been used by the U.S. Federal Reserve, Bank of England, and the Bank of Japan. It's often called "printing money." No printing press is involved but the measure does rely on central banks' power to create money.

Lobster champion, Bean heiress, donates $3M to LifeFlight program to help buy 3rd helicopter

2 hours, 58 minutes ago

ST. GEORGE, Maine (AP) — A champion of the Maine lobster industry and an heiress to the L.L. Bean outdoors retailer has announced a $3 million donation to the state's LifeFlight Foundation. Bean said in a statement that Maine is home to many industries — including fishing, farming and forestry — that are inherently dangerous and are often carried out in remote areas and a helicopter may be able to help an injured person much faster than a land-based ambulance.

Toyota recalls nearly 423,000 Lexus cars; fuel leaks can cause fires

DETROIT (AP) — Toyota is recalling nearly 423,000 Lexus luxury brand cars in the U.S. to fix fuel leaks that can cause fires. The recalls affect the 2006 to 2011 GS, 2007 to 2010 LS and the 2006 to 2011 IS models. Toyota says the cars' fuel lines have nickel phosphate plating to protect against corrosion. Some lines could have been built with particles coming in contact with a gasket. That can cause the sealing property to deteriorate and cause fuel leaks.
