Mary Jo White says the SEC will now demand admissions in cases involving serious fraud or harm to investors, and where "it's very important to have that public acknowledgement and accountability." She disclosed the planned policy change Tuesday at a conference organized by The Wall Street Journal.

The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday tentatively approved a ban on plastic grocery bags, with a final vote scheduled for next week. Los Angeles "took a stand today for our children to protect our environment, which also sends a strong and clear message to every big city in the nation that they should follow our lead," said Councilmember Jose Huizar, who chairs the Energy and Environment Committee.
18 mayors: Limit use of food stamps to buy soda

The mayors of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and 15 other cities are reviving a push against letting food stamps be used to buy soda and other sugary drinks. "We need to find ways to strengthen the program and promote good nutrition while limiting the use of these resources for items with no nutritional value, like sugary drinks, that are actually harming the health of participants," Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whose office released the letter, said in a statement. "Why should we continue supporting unhealthy purchases in the false name of nutrition assistance?"
