Economists say broader immigration overhaul would drive more growth than Obama's actions

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama's expansive executive action on immigration is good for the U.S. economy — just not as good as partnering with Congress on broader reforms. "This is focused on people who are already in the economy today, who are contributing mightily but are basically operating in the shadows," said Raul Hinojosa-Ojeda, a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles. "Their economic potential is being held back."

Egypt, supported by Saudi Arabia and UAE, to host international economic conference in March

CAIRO (AP) — Egypt's prime minister says his government will host a three-day international economic conference in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh starting March 13 to support the country's economy. Mahlab said the conference aims to attract international institutions and countries to invest in a "new Egypt." He said his government aims to amend investment-related laws before the conference. He said the aim is to raise Egypt's annual economic growth to 3.8 percent. It has hovered around 2 percent since the country's 2011 revolt.

British insurance companies Aviva and Friends Life in $8.8 billion merger talks

LONDON (AP) — Britain's Aviva says it is in talks to buy another insurer, Friends Life for over 5.6 billion pounds ($8.8 billion) in a deal that would create the country's leading insurance, savings and asset management company by number of customers. Friends Life says it is willing to recommend the deal to its shareholders, subject to agreement on other terms.

Biden urges Europe to diversity its energy supplies to reduce dependence on Russia

ISTANBUL (AP) — U.S. Vice President Joe Biden on Saturday called on Europe to continue diversifying its energy supplies to reduce dependence on Russia, which he said should not be allowed to use its vast gas and oil resources as a geopolitical tool. Russia, Ukraine and the European Union last month thrashed out a $4.6 billion deal that will guarantee Russian gas supplies to Ukraine and further on to the European Union. The deal eased fears that Europe will end up shivering this winter like it did in 2009, when a spat over Ukraine's gas bill prompted Russia to cut off energy supplies to Europe for nearly two weeks.
