Ohio hits private prison food vendor with $142,100 fine for failure to meet staffing levels

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — The private food vendor that holds the contract for feeding Ohio's 50,000 prisoners has repeatedly failed to meet the staffing levels it promised, the state announced Friday as it hit the company with $142,100 in fines. Aramark also failed to meet the staffing requirement of a minimum of 414 positions called for in the contract, and failed to have a certified food service manager for several months at the state's Southeastern Correctional Complex Hocking Unit in Nelsonville.

USDA orders hog farms, labs to report infections from virus that has killed millions of pigs

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Farms stricken with a deadly pig virus must report outbreaks as part of a new program to help monitor and possibly control the spread of the disease, the federal government announced Friday. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said it would step up efforts by requiring farms to report infections and labs to report positive tests from submitted tissue and fecal samples. Farms that suffer an outbreak also will have to participate in a program to help control the spread of the disease; details of that program have not yet been worked out.

Calpine says it will sell six Southeast power plants to LS Power for $1.57B

NEW YORK (AP) — Independent power producer Calpine said Friday will sell six power plants in the Southeast to LS Power for $1.57 billion. Calpine expects the sale to close during the second quarter. It expects to gain $100 million to its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization from the sale in 2014.

Gold medal from 'Miracle on Ice' game in 1980 to be auctioned by Minnesota native Pavelich

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — One of the Olympic gold medals earned after the famed "Miracle on Ice" hockey game in 1980 will be auctioned beginning next week. Team USA, made up of amateur and collegiate players and led by coach Herb Brooks, defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union at the Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Pavelich, who now lives in Lutsen, was among many Minnesotans on the team and skated for the University of Minnesota Duluth. The team's story was turned into the Hollywood hit "Miracle" in 2004.
