NTSB: Pilot errors caused deadly Georgia jet crash; lack of sleep called contributing factor

ATLANTA (AP) — Federal investigators say a pilot failed to follow procedures during landing, and that fatigue from lack of sleep contributed to a fiery jet crash that killed a Georgia vascular surgeon and four colleagues from a vein care practice. The report says that the pilot only slept five hours the night before and later slept for about four hours in a chair in a pilot lounge in Nashville, Tennessee.

US stocks advance, helped by Chinese economic data and Apple's quarterly results

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stock indexes rose Tuesday, putting the market on track for a fourth gain in a row, following an encouraging report on the Chinese economy as well as strong quarterly results from Apple and other big companies. Stocks continued to recover from last week's plunge. CHINA RELIEF: China's economy expanded by 7.3 percent in the third quarter from a year earlier. Although growth slowed slightly from the previous quarter's 7.5 percent, analysts had expected a more marked slowdown, to 6.9 percent.

Demand for Kentucky bourbon propels spikes in production, work force

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky's bourbon industry is making a bigger splash in the state's economy, nearly doubling its workforce in two years and leading a $3 billion distilling sector, a study said Tuesday. The bourbon sector's workforce now tops 15,400, up from 8,690 workers two years ago. Payroll surged to more than $707 million, compared to $413 million in 2012. The average salary for distillery employees is $91,188.

McDonald's CEO: We haven't been changing to keep up with customer expectations

NEW YORK (AP) — McDonald's CEO Don Thompson said Tuesday the company hasn't been keeping up with the times and that changes are in store for its U.S. restaurants. "We haven't been changing at the same rate as our customers' eating-out expectations," Thompson conceded during a conference call outlining the changes.
