Royalty Pharma offer for Elan gets little support

Royalty Pharma disclosed Friday that a negligible number of Elan Corp. PLC shareholders have voted their shares in favor of its offer to buy the company. On Thursday Royalty Pharma formally raised its offer to $12.50 per share, or about $7.5 billion. The revised bid is scheduled to expire June 6. Royalty Pharma also eased one of its conditions for completing the offer, lowering a threshold for the percentage of shareholders who must vote for the deal to more than 50 percent from 90 percent. Elan has said the bids are too low and has urged its shareholders to reject them.

California state agencies would be required to give journalists five days' notice before they issue subpoenas to a third-party company for telephone records under legislation announced Thursday by a state senator. He acted after it was disclosed that the U.S. Department of Justice had retrieved the logs from 20 business and personal telephone lines of journalists employed by The Associated Press. Lieu and other critics said the threat of such surveillance impedes journalists' ability to report the news, including their ability to gather information from government sources.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has added to his roster of high-end real estate, buying a house and a vacant parcel last year next to a 35-acre estate he already owns in tony Southampton, according to information released Thursday by City Hall. Forbes estimates Bloomberg's fortune at $27 billion, making him 13th on the magazine's global list of billionaires. He gave about $370 million to charity last year.
