Man pleads guilty to smuggling snakes on planes

2 hours, 26 minutes ago

Samuel L. Jackson would have been cursing up a storm. An East Texas man has pleaded guilty to smuggling snakes on several planes from South America to the United States. During a court hearing Wednesday in Tyler, William Lamar pleaded guilty to importing wildlife taken in violation of foreign law. Prosecutors say the 63-year-old eco-tourism guide bought the seven live snakes in August 2012 in a market in Lima, Peru, and smuggled them in his jacket on flights from Lima to Miami and then to Dallas.

Brazil protesters clash with police in Sao Paulo

2 hours, 26 minutes ago

Protesters surrounding the city hall of Brazil's biggest city have clashed with police when a small group of demonstrators tried to force their way into the building. GloboNews says Sao Paulo Mayor Fernando Haddad was not in City Hall at the time. Tuesday's protest was the sixth major demonstration in Sao Paulo since last week.

U of Oregon plans to bar too-wide seat cushions

2 hours, 32 minutes ago

Some University of Oregon fans say it's getting crowded in the bleachers. The problem: Jumbo seat cushions. So the school proposes to limit cushions to 17 inches wide. University spokeswoman Julie Brown says there have been "a few complaints" about extra-wide cushions taking up too much space at venues with bench-style seating, such as Autzen Stadium and Hayward Field. The benches include seat numbers, but no lines to mark just how much room each spectator gets.

G-8 NOTEBOOK: Cameron Tweets WWII bomb at G-8 site

2 hours, 32 minutes ago

Well, that was close. Or was it? Shortly after wrapping up one of the most peaceful Group of Eight summits in recent memory, Prime Minister David Cameron let a cat out of the bag. Not to worry, however. Northern Ireland police mounted a massive security operation to protect the Loch Erne resort west of Enniskillen involving thousands of officers, restricted airspace and contingencies for protesters. While the security appeared aimed at more modern threats, it clearly paid off.
