6 Wyeth paintings fetch $2M at NYC auction

1 hour, 36 minutes ago

Six paintings by the famous Wyeth family of artists have sold for just over $2 million at a New York City auction. New Jersey businessman Eric Sambol sold the works by Andrew, Jamie and N.C. Wyeth at Christie's on Thursday. They included three by Andrew, two by Jamie, and one by N.C. The highlight of the sale was N.C. Wyeth's "Norry Seavey Hauling Lobster Traps Off Blubber Island." The 1938 oil of a fisherman off the coast of Port Clyde, Maine, sold for nearly $844,000.

Wash. I-5 bridge collapse caused by oversize load

1 hour, 36 minutes ago

A truck hauling a too-tall load hit an overhead girder of a bridge on the major thoroughfare between Seattle and Canada, sending a section of the span and two vehicles into the Skagit River below, though all three occupants suffered only minor injuries. Initially, it wasn't clear if the bridge just gave way on its own. But at an overnight news conference, Washington State Patrol Chief John Batiste blamed it on a tractor-trailer carrying an oversize load that hit an upper part of the span. The vertical clearance from the roadway to the beam is 14.6 feet.

GOP's Walker touts state ties during trip to Iowa

1 hour, 40 minutes ago

Scott Walker tried to introduce himself to Iowa Republicans Thursday as so many would-be presidential candidates often do _ one of their own. More broadly, the rising GOP figure prescribed what he characterized as a Midwestern approach to politics and the way for Republicans, back-to-back White House losers, to win again.

Brown hounded for calling Manila 'gates of hell'

1 hour, 40 minutes ago

Dan Brown's description of Manila as "the gates of hell" in the American novelist's latest book has not gone down well with officials in the Philippine capital. The chairman of metropolitan Manila, Francis Tolentino, wrote an open letter to Brown on Thursday, saying that while "Inferno" is fiction, "we are greatly disappointed by your inaccurate portrayal of our beloved metropolis."
