A week after rejecting a bill that would have prohibited employers from paying unequal wages for the same job based on gender, the Louisiana Senate reworked the proposal Wednesday to apply only to state employees. Murray, D-New Orleans, said women in Louisiana routinely make less than men who perform the same jobs. He said there is more salary disparity in the private sector, than among state employees.
Stein Mart 1Q profit surges, beats estimates

Stein Mart's net income rose 36 percent in its first quarter, buoyed by higher revenue and a lower tax rate. Its results topped Wall Street estimates, and it shares briefly rose to their highest level in almost four years. For the period ended May 4, the discount retailer earned $14.7 million, or 33 cents per share, up from $10.8 million, or 25 cents per share, a year ago.
Marathon Oil says talks end on possible stake sale

Marathon Oil said Thursday that talks on a potential sale of part of its stake in the Athabasca Oil Sands Project in Canada have ended. Marathon Oil Corp. was in talks with a possible buyer for a portion of its 20 percent stake in the project, but said a deal was not reached. The potential buyer was not named.
NC Senate spending plan given initial OK

The North Carolina Senate gave initial approval Wednesday to a state budget proposal after a fierce partisan debate in which Democrats accused the plan's Republican authors of choosing tax reductions over restoring cuts to education, health and rural development. The measure also would spend $1.2 billion in additional funds in Medicaid through mid-2015 to keep up with growth in the government health insurance programs for 1.5 million mostly poor state residents. Medicaid shortfalls have been common under both Democratic and Republican leadership at the legislature.
