California state agencies would be required to give journalists five days' notice before they issue subpoenas to a third-party company for telephone records under legislation announced Thursday by a state senator. He acted after it was disclosed that the U.S. Department of Justice had retrieved the logs from 20 business and personal telephone lines of journalists employed by The Associated Press. Lieu and other critics said the threat of such surveillance impedes journalists' ability to report the news, including their ability to gather information from government sources.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg has added to his roster of high-end real estate, buying a house and a vacant parcel last year next to a 35-acre estate he already owns in tony Southampton, according to information released Thursday by City Hall. Forbes estimates Bloomberg's fortune at $27 billion, making him 13th on the magazine's global list of billionaires. He gave about $370 million to charity last year.
Conn. Senate votes to raise minimum wage

Connecticut's minimum wage workers are moving closer to getting a raise. The Senate voted 21-to-15 on Thursday to increase the current wage of $8.25 an hour to $8.70 on Jan. 1, 2014. It would increase to $9 on Jan. 1, 2015. The last increases occurred in 2010. The bill, which moves to the House of Representatives, mirrors what the governor said he'd support. An earlier bill proposed larger increases. And unlike that bill, the legislation does not link future increases to Consumer Price Index.
Jersey shore reopens for 1st post-Sandy summer

New Jersey rolled out some of its big guns Friday to proclaim that the shore is back following Superstorm Sandy, using Gov. Chris Christie and the cast of MTV's "Jersey Shore" to tell a national audience the state is ready for summer fun. "This is known as a happy place," said Paul "Pauly D" Del Vecchio, one of the cast members of "Jersey Shore," which was filmed here until wrapping up last year. "Right after the storm, it was the exact opposite: dead, silent. To see this place being rebuilt makes me happy."
