An auction to pay off a debt of Nelson Mandela's ex-wife failed to take place because no one would open her home to the sheriff. Officials and reporters gathered Tuesday outside the gated home of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. No one responded to the doorbell although a black car sped out of the gates.
Death toll in Turkish balloon crash reaches 3

Officials say another Brazilian tourist has died of injuries sustained after a hot air balloon crashed to the ground, raising the number of tourists killed to 3. The governor's office for Nevsehir province said Tuesday that a third tourist from Brazil died in hospital on Monday. Twenty-one other tourists from Brazil, Argentina and Spain and their Portuguese pilot were injured in the crash.
Philippines protests Chinese warship's presence

The Philippines has protested the presence of a Chinese warship, two surveillance vessels and fishing boats off a shoal occupied by its military in the disputed Spratly Islands, in the latest territorial squabble between the Asian countries, officials said Tuesday. "Our message to the whole world is clear: what belongs to the Philippines belongs to the Philippines," Aquino said in a speech at a naval base in Cavite province south of Manila. "We can fight back and defend ourselves every time somebody will threaten us right in our own home ground."
Pigeon sale yields world record for feathered Bolt

Lightning fast pigeon Bolt, with a name and pedigree to match, has become the world's most expensive racing bird with his Belgian breeder selling it for 310,000 euros ($400,000) to a Chinese businessman. Pipa CEO Nikolaas Gyselbrecht said Tuesday he was "stunned by the prices offered" in the auction of 530 birds which also yielded a world record of 4.345 million euros ($5.58 million). Nine of the 10 top birds went to China or Taiwan.
