News Summary: April US new home sales up 2.3 pct

HOT SELLERS: Sales of new homes rose to a seasonally adjusted rate of 454,000 in April, the second highest level since the summer of 2008. That was up 2.3 percent from March and just slightly below January's 458,000. REGIONAL BREAKDOWN: The strength in April was led by a 10.8 percent rise in sales in the West. Sales in the South were up 3 percent but sales fell 16.7 percent in the Northeast and were down 4.8 percent in the Midwest.

Va. landmark Natural Bridge up for sale

A Virginia landmark and tourism attraction once owned by Thomas Jefferson is up for sale. The privately owned Natural Bridge, north of Roanoke, is being put on the market, along with Natural Bridge Caverns and a 150-room hotel. Roanoke-based Woltz & Associates is marketing the tourist attraction. Woltz & Associates owner and president Jim Woltz tells The Roanoke Times ( http://bit.ly/Z2ioIT ) the 1,600-acre property will be divided and listed by tracts. Potential buyers could purchase only the 215-foot-high limestone arch, or every tract. http://bit.ly/Z2ioIT The property's primary owner is Washington, D.C., businessman Angelo Puglisi. Woltz says Puglisi wants the bridge to remain open to the public.

Grains futures rise, livestock prices mixed

Grains futures mostly rose Thursday on the Chicago Board of Trade. Wheat for July delivery rose 13.5 cents to $7.02 a bushel; July corn rose 2.5 cents to $6.61 a bushel; July oats were flat at $3.665 a bushel; while July soybeans jumped 13.75 cents to $15.08 a bushel. Beef and pork prices were mixed on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange.

Rail workers injured in crash hire lawyer

Seven Metro-North railroad workers injured in last week's collision on the commuter line have hired a lawyer to pursue damages. The engineers of the two trains involved are among the clients of George Cahill, a New Haven-based railroad law attorney. Cahill says he's looking into whether recent track repairs may have led an eastbound commuter train to derail near Bridgeport and crash into the westbound train heading toward New York.
