(AP) — Visa Inc. said Thursday that its profit climbed 11 percent in its fiscal third quarter versus a year earlier, aided by solid growth in payments volume, service revenue and transactions. Visa shares slumped 3.4 percent in after-market trading. Foster City, California-based Visa is the world's largest processor of debit and credit card payments. As such, it benefits from heightened consumer spending, and its results are closely watched because they can be a window into the buying habits and financial health of consumers.

Starbucks 2nd-quarter profit rises as food offerings become a bigger driver to cafes

NEW YORK (AP) — Starbucks said Thursday its revamped breakfast sandwiches and other food offerings helped boost sales at its U.S. cafes. In a conference call with analysts, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz said food has become a strength and drives traffic to cafes, and that the company was just getting started in its efforts in improving its lineup.

Amazon shares fall on deeper-than-expected 2nd-quarter loss

SEATTLE (AP) — Shares of Amazon.com Inc. fell Thursday after the e-commerce retailer reported a deeper-than-expected second quarter loss as expenses outpaced a surge in revenue. The company has been heavily investing in services for its loyalty program, Prime, which costs $99 a year, and includes free two-day shipping on many items. It has added a grocery delivery services and music streaming for Prime Members as well as offering original TV shows and apps. It also expanded Sunday deliveries and recently began offering a set-top video streaming box.

Proxy adviser ISS says Sprint CEO Hesse was paid too much to stay after sale to Softbank

NEW YORK (AP) — Institutional Shareholder Services, a leading shareholder advisory firm, is telling shareholders to protest Sprint Corp. CEO Dan Hesse's $49 million 2013 pay package, saying it's excessive and not tied to performance. Shareholders will vote on approving the executive pay package on Aug. 6. The vote is only advisory, but boards take "no" votes seriously.
