1 hour, 38 minutes ago

The number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits fell by 23,000 last week, further evidence that the job market is slowly returning to health. The less volatile four-week average ticked down just 500 to 339,500. That's close to the five-year low of 338,000 registered during the first week of May. The four-week average is 9 percent lower than in November.

Southern Co. CEO defends Miss. power project

1 hour, 40 minutes ago

The head of Southern Co. called the decision to write off $540 million in extra costs on a Mississippi power plant "a bitter pill for us to swallow," but he defended the project Wednesday as a long-term investment for the large utility. Losses from the plant, a project of Southern Co. subsidiary Mississippi Power, proved a drag on the parent company's net income, which fell 78 percent to $81 million during the first three months of the year compared to $368 million during the same period last year. Mississippi Power said it will not pass the extra costs on to its customers.

Rhode Island Senate OKs minimum wage hike

1 hour, 40 minutes ago

Rhode Island's minimum wage would go up 25 cents to $8 per hour next year under legislation approved Wednesday by the state Senate. The state's minimum wage is now $7.75, compared with the federal minimum of $7.25, while the minimum wage is $8 in Massachusetts and $8.25 in Connecticut. Supporters of the raise said many Rhode Islanders are forced to work multiple minimum-wage jobs to afford rent, food and transportation. An extra quarter an hour _ or about $10 a week _ might help make ends meet, they said.
