House committee passes Iran sanctions legislation

1 hour, 7 minutes ago

A new push to thwart Iran's nuclear ambitions by crippling the country's economy gathered momentum on Capitol Hill Wednesday with approval of legislation by the House Foreign Affairs Committee that would impose even tougher economic sanctions against Tehran. The U.S. and other world powers fear Iran's production and stockpiling of uranium enrichment is aimed at developing a nuclear weapon. Iran insists its work is for peaceful purposes.

4-nation Pacific Alliance trade bloc forges ahead

1 hour, 7 minutes ago

The presidents of Colombia, Peru, Chile and Mexico meet in the western city of Cali on Thursday in hopes of completing a nascent trade bloc that looks to the European Union as a model and aims to further open their trade with Asia. The Pacific Alliance was formally inaugurated last June. All its members but Colombia already belong to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an Asia-Pacific-wide trading bloc that includes Canada and the United States.

Fisher-Price moving, eliminating about 100 NY jobs

1 hour, 9 minutes ago

Toy maker Fisher-Price says it's moving or eliminating roughly 100 jobs from its New York operations as part of restructuring by parent company Mattel Inc. Most of the affected employees work at Fisher-Price's headquarters in East Aurora, N.Y., near Buffalo. The rest are in New York City. Fisher-Price makes Little People and Power Wheels. A company spokeswoman says the cuts don't affect employees in toy design and development at the 900-employee East Aurora campus.

Pa. control may limit Harrisburg election's impact

1 hour, 9 minutes ago

Pennsylvania's debt-laden capital city will have a new mayor next year, but he could have little role in sorting out the pressing financial problems that dragged Harrisburg to the brink of bankruptcy after an unprecedented takeover by the state. For now, a state-appointed receiver, William Lynch, is in control and is working to resolve nearly $350 million in debt tied to Harrisburg's municipal trash incinerator and a persistent gap in its operating budget that he has estimated would be $7 million on anticipated spending of about $58 million for the year.
